How often have you clicked through to the second page of results on Google? We’re betting it’s not often. In fact, research shows that only five per cent (!) of users click through to the second page of results, which means if your business isn’t on the first page, you probably won’t get found. So what can you do about it? Introducing SEO (search engine optimisation).
For the uninitiated, SEO helps search engines find your website in relation to ‘search queries’ – i.e the search terms you type into Google. The more your website reflects what people are searching for, the higher up in the rankings your website will appear.
However SEO is a tricky beast with many moving parts. The age of your website, your content, keywords, URLs, metatags and images can all have an impact – and that’s only the beginning. It’s also worth noting that even when you are doing everything right, SEO can take a while to deliver, and if the search terms you are targeting are dominated by other businesses in your industry, it can be hard to compete.
The good news is there are some simple ways to improve your SEO. All you need is a bit of know how (that’s where we come in!) Here are three ways you can give yourself a SEO boost.
Make sure your website is optimised
A well-structured, fast, mobile friendly website is essential – not just for SEO, but for user experience. Your website is your digital store-front and often the first impression for potential customers – and in order to compete in today’s market, a slick website that’s optimised with SEO is imperative (and we can help with all of that!)
Write some great content
If your website just lists your products and contact details, then you’re missing an opportunity for some additional SEO. You don’t need to write an essay or even start a blog (however blog content is a great way to drive SEO!) but a short, engaging piece on your About page which outlines your business and history can be a great benefit to your ranking, especially with some well-thought-out keywords. We’ve been building websites for over 20 years at SOMO creative and have a whip smart team of copywriters who are experts in crafting SEO optimised, keyword rich content. It’s all about the backlinks
Think of internet as a big web of links (world wide web, get it?), and Google as a spider that finds websites via this web. Google is known for changing its algorithm every few months, but link building has remained a cornerstone of SEO – and experts still consider it the most valuable way to build your ranking. So what does this mean? If a trustworthy, popular, high-authority site that has good SEO (like Cityscape.co.nz or Destination-nz.com) links to your website with anchor text, this signals to search engines that others vouch for the content on your website and increases your rankings. If you link back, even better. The other added benefit is that these links will help drive relevant traffic to your site – and potential customers!
