Why do you need a social media strategy?

Do you find you’re spending a lot of time and resources on social media and you’re still not reaching the right people? Perhaps you know you should be on social media (but aren’t quite sure why) so you’re using a ‘throw it all at the wall and see what sticks approach’, but not much seems to be sticking.

Social media can be a powerful tool to help you reach your audience. Do it right, and you’ll have a loyal tribe that will engage with what you’re communicating and spread the word (after all, social media is a conversation and content sharing platform). But if you don’t, you might see yourself pouring a whole lot of time and energy down the gurgler with no engagement, followers or footfall to show for it. As a business owner, you want to make sure the time you are spending is getting the best return. And for that to happen, you need to make sure every post counts.

So how do you do that? You need a strategy.

If you don’t have one, here are three easy steps you can do today to get started!

1. Take stock of where you’re at

Take a good look at your current profiles. Does your profile image and banner reflect your brand? Are your business details up to date and are you easy to find? Take a look at your best performing content and the ones that didn’t do so well. Can you figure out why?

2. Set your goals

Perhaps you want to grow followers, or build a more engaged following. Or maybe you may want to build brand equity, or just get more people through the door

Determine your target market and who you want to reach as this will define your tone of voice and what you stand for. Are you an authoritative voice to be taken seriously or a good friend that’s passing on some insider know-how? You’ll want to have a look at your competition (in particular, the posts that are getting the most engagement) and also make a list of other accounts and posts that you like.

3. Content is king

The next thing to think about is where you’ll get your content. While creating your own content is a great idea, it can be time consuming, so you’ll want to consider a content mix. This can include images (self-created or sourced), videos, gifs and social graphics. Free stock image websites can be a great source of licence free pictures, and social graphics using a design tool like Canva can be a quick way to give your content mix balance. Don’t forget who you’re talking to and keep top of mind that every post should entertain, educate, solve a problem or tell a story.
