Digital newsletters are a cost-effective tool to get sales for your business and keep your loyal customers up to date on your latest happenings. Learn about the value of Electronic Direct Mail (EDM), and grab some of SOMO Creative’s tips for getting results.
Use your news
One of the most common things we tell new clients is “Use your newsletter platform”. Whether you’ve got an old Mailchimp account gathering dust, or you’re yet to even begin the EDM process, you’ve got to know that this is one of the most valuable ways to connect with customers. People who subscribe to your newsletter already like your brand, and are looking for more opportunities to engage with you.
Get a database going
There’s no point making fancy newsletters if you’ve got nobody to send them to. If you’re an ecommerce store, you’ve probably already got a database of email addresses you’re not tapping into. If you don’t have many (or any!) email addresses in your database, then get the word out! Put a signup box on your website. Ask people to enter a business card draw. Ask people on social media to sign up to your newsletter. You’d be amazed how many people are interested in what you’re offering.
Automate (some) emails
Many website and EDM platforms have the option to send EDMs to people automatically when they perform certain actions. This is a great opportunity to create sales funnels and target people when they most need your product – and it takes no more effort on your part once you’ve set it up! Examples of automated emails you can send include when someone…
- … abandons their shopping cart with items still in it
- … (a loyal customer) hasn’t purchased from you in several months
- … signs up to your newsletter
- … makes their first purchase
Touch base with your fans
The people most likely to buy from you or engage with you are those who are already your customers. Tell them what you’re up to, and they’ll love it. Write about news in your industry, new products, new team members, tips and tricks.
Make it match your brand
If you’re a slick, modern business, then don’t send out an EDM that looks like it was drafted by your neighbour’s nephew in Gmail. Design something that looks like it fits in with your website and brand collateral. Wording is important, too. Is your business elegant, cheeky, funny, or informative? Write copy that fits the bill.
